Award-winning photojournalist Robin Loznak shares his favorite wildlife images of 2012 with TODAY.com, and offers tips for new photographers who’d like to try their hand at documenting the world outside their own front (or back) doors.

Plum feast

SEPT. 23, 2012- A large sphinx moth caterpillar climbs over a bin of freshly picked plums on farm near Roseburg, Ore., on Sunday, Sept. 23, 2012. The caterpillar was probably feeding on the leaves of the plum tree and was harvested along with the fruit. (Image Credit: © Robin Loznak) I also made a short video of the caterpillar: http://bit.ly/VAGKDj

Why did the chicken...

JAN 16, 2012- A chicken crosses a road in rural Douglas County near Oakland, Ore., on Monday, Jan. 16, 2012. This was probably my most widely seen photo of 2012. It was even made into a photoshop meme on one website. Truth be told, the chicken is looking for food and that's why it crossed the road.

Nesting

APRIL 9, 2012- An osprey brings a stick for nest building high on a dead tree along the North Umpqua River in Roseburg, Ore., on Monday, April 9, 2012. Osprey are fish-eating birds of prey. They're sometimes know as sea hawks, fish eagles or fish hawks. I shot this from a long distance with my super-telephoto lens.

Adorable otters

Oct. 26, 2012- A pair of wild river otters relax on a chunk of concrete debris in Deer Creek in Roseburg, Ore., on Friday, Oct. 26, 2012. The pair were hunting and frolicking in the creek which runs through downtown just a few hundred yards from City Hall. I was busy shooting pictures of a small waterfall on the creek. I looked up and saw these two cute fellows watching me. I followed them for a while along the creek. It was one of the highlights of my year. (Image Credit: © Robin Loznak)

Lotta larvae

JUNE 10, 2012- Mosquito larvae float at the surface of water in a jar on a ranch near Roseburg, Ore., on Sunday, June 10, 2012. The larvae were captured from a cattle watering trough on the ranch. Mosquito larvae breath through a tube extending from their abdomens. Due to the many diseases and parasites they carry, some scientists have declared mosquitoes to be most dangerous animal on earth. I also made a show time-lapse movie of these guys: http://youtu.be/YOi7sRfpPeg

I was looking for a fall color photo when I spotted the small spider making its way along the fence strand. (Image Credit: © Robin Loznak)

Ready for my close-up

DEC. 2, 2012- An Oregon Ensatina salamander crawls over a moss and mushroom covered log in a moist forested area near Elkton, Ore., on Sunday, Dec. 9, 2012. Ensatina salamanders are lungless and respirate through their skin. Salamanders are actually not slimy. They're cool and damp. (Image Credit: © Robin Loznak)

Dangerous perch

MAY 7, 2012- A fly perches on the head of a western fence lizard sunning itself on a fencepost along a pasture on a farm in rural Douglas County, Ore.,on Monday, May 7, 2012. Look closely and see two ticks imbedded in the lizard's scales behind its ear. I'm pretty sure lizards eat flies, but not in this case.

Watershed

MARCH 15, 2012- A wet pigeon shakes off rainwater during a downpour at a city park in Roseburg, Ore., on Thursday, March 15, 2012. As is typical in the Pacific Northwest this time of year, the area has recently been hit with a series of wet weather systems. Getting the timing just right was difficult for this photo.

Tug-o-war

FEB 16, 2012- An American robin struggles to pull a large juicy worm from the ground at River Forks Park near Roseburg, Ore., on Thursday, Feb 16, 2012. After yanking and pulling, the bird finally freed the worm and gobbled it up. A fun cartoon-like moment caught on camera.
