Stuck indoors somewhere cold? Take a trip to the beach with San Diego's new "seal cam," which now allows the public a 24/7 view of a group of seals sunning themselves at the Children's Pool in La Jolla, Calif.
The seals' presence has been a topic of contention in the San Diego suburb for years, as some believe they should be removed from the beach in order to free up more space for beachgoers.
But animal lovers, including San Diego mayor Bob Filner, are proud to have the seals in town and want to show them off.
"This is a great way to showcase San Diego's unique, natural treasure with people all over the world," Filner said of the camera, which was unveiled last Thursday. Filner said it is the first of its kind on the Pacific coast.
A live stream of the "seal cam" can be seen on the mayor's website. The camera was installed at the top of a lifeguard chair on the beach and was paid for by the nonprofit Western Alliance for Nature.
According to the mayor's website, he hopes the seal cam "will give researchers and the world a 24-hour window on the Harbor Seal rookery at La Jolla Children's Pool."
