As the White House family dog, Bo knows how to capture the spotlight. But apparently, he needs some help watching his figure.

The Portuguese water dog is on a diet, according to U.S. News & World Report

President Obama leaked the news to a group of young diners attending the first Kids State Dinner that the first lady hosted at the White House.

"I only have one request for you, and that is try not to drop any scraps on the floor," the president told the kids gathered in the East Room Monday. "Because Bo... is on a diet right now and he will eat anything that he sees, especially some of the tasty meals that you guys have prepared."

We can’t say this wasn’t expected, after all, first lady Michelle Obama has championed a national effort to fight childhood obesity through exercise and healthy eating. Now, it seems, it’s Bo’s turn to shape up.

Story: Kids make eating well look like child's play

The children attending the state dinner (which actually was a luncheon) secured seats by winning a healthy recipe contest. One child was selected from each state and territory.

Semonti Stephens, a spokeswoman for the first lady, declined to offer any details about the president’s comments regarding Bo or his diet.
