If Lindsay Lohan and her family feel embarrassed about this week's will-she-or-won’t-she “Late Show” drama, host David Letterman is sorry. Sort of.
On Tuesday, CBS announced that the recently rehabbed actress would appear on the program later in the week, but that same night Lohan tweeted, “I am NOT going to be on David Letterman. I’m not sure how this happened, but I’m sorry for the confusion.”
The confusion was cleared up Wednesday morning when LiLo’s father, Michael Lohan, admitted he was the man behind the booking. By Wednesday night, Letterman offered his take on the matter.
“Last week I did a thing on the Grammys with a Top Ten List, and there was a Lindsay Lohan joke about her stealing a Grammy award” Letterman explained. “The next day I get a call and there's a guy and he says, 'Lindsay thought the joke was hilarious.' Now you know Lindsay is gonna stand trial for stealing stuff. So the guy says, 'Lindsay thought that joke was hilarious. She wants to be on your show,' and I said, 'Great! Great!'"
That’s when Letterman gave his PR department the go-ahead spread the news.
"People are just, ‘Are you kidding me? This is gonna be fantastic. This is gonna be like the Super Bowl,’” the host joked. “And then Lindsay Lohan says, ‘Oh, you know none of that's happening.’ It turns out we were duped. And I have no one to blame but myself, and boy is my face red."
Letterman then offered his apologetic kicker.
"Now I need to apologize to the Lindsay Lohan family," Letterman deadpanned as his audience laughed. "I hope I didn't embarrass you, Lindsay, and your family."
