Controversy emerged for the football star after a photo of his bill for a Chinese order got leaked online. The receipt showed a $3 tip on top of a $74 bill.

Brees later went on Twitter to explain that he left the tip on a takeout order he picked up himself – and that if he had sat inside the restaurant, he would have tipped more than 20 percent.

Kathie Lee said Brees is a “very, very generous guy” known for his charity work, but the hullabaloo did make her wonder about etiquette surrounding takeout orders.

KLG said she usually drops in a few bucks if there’s a tip jar on the counter.

“But otherwise, that is a service tip that you put on for service,” she said. “If there’s no service involved, I don’t think it’s necessary. It’s a really nice thing to do but I don’t think it’s required.”

KLG said American culture is extremely tip oriented, which is the opposite of European protocol. Last week while vacationing in Italy, she noticed that nobody left tips on their bills, so she repeatedly inquired whether gratuity was included. She finally asked her hotel concierge about tipping etiquette and was told it wasn't expected.

“Do you know how much money I spent last week? I tipped everybody,” she said. “No wonder they gave me a nice seat every place I went.”
