We love discovering creative new uses for everyday things. So when we learned that cream of tartar — yes, THAT baking ingredient and pantry staple — could actually be helpful to clean different things in and around the home, we were all ears. Of course, we had to put this ingredient to the test, and sure enough it did the trick!

Here are 3 new ways cream of tartar can help you clean around your home:

1. Banish ring around the collar

Before you ditch that dress shirt because of unsightly ring around the collar, try this! First, spritz the collar area with water, sprinkle on some cream of tartar and then massage the powder into the stain. Launder as usual and watch the stains disappear!

2. Clean your bathroom grout

Has your bathroom grout seen better days? This might do the trick. Just create a thick paste using cream of tartar and white vinegar, and apply to your grout using an old toothbrush. Let it sit for 10 minutes, then wipe clean. Mold and mildew be gone!

3. Remove dark stains from coffee mugs

Having a favorite mug for coffee is totally acceptable, but the dark coffee stains on the inside don't have to render your cup a catastrophe. Here's an easy fix: Put a small amount of cream of tartar and a few drops of water into your mug, let it sit for about 30 seconds, then scrub and rinse clean. Good as new!
