“American Idol” had a little something for everyone Wednesday night, as the vocal hopefuls took on pop and rock classics from Elton John. Some put on loud and wild performances, while others stuck to strictly sit-down ballads, and some played it safe, while others played with fire.
Last week’s last-minute save, Casey Abrams, put on a more tailored look and delivered an uncharacteristically understated performance. The man who’s gone all out, with varying degrees of success, each and every time he’s stepped on the stage, played it safe by reining in his big personality on “Your Song.”
No one could accuse Haley Reinhart of playing it safe Wednesday night. According to judge Randy Jackson, Reinhart’s rendition of “Bennie and the Jets” was the best of the night. Heck, the hold-nothing-back performance might just have been her personal best in the competition yet.
If Abrams and Reinhart didn’t manage to thrill some “Idol” fans, James Durbin more than made up for it with his rocking “Saturday Night’s Alright (For Fighting)” routine, complete with piano flambé.
