Michael Phelps announced that he was engaged to former Miss California Nicole Johnson with a photo of the couple on Instagram early Sunday morning.
"She said yes," the 29-year-old swimmer captioned the photo.
For her part, Johnson, who started dating Phelps on-and-off around 2007, shared a similar Instagram photo of the pair embracing in the snow. Her caption read: "I'm gonna be a Mrs."
Phelps' sometime-training partner and fellow Olympian Allison Schmitt took the photos of the happy couple in the snow, and shared her own Instagram congratulating the duo. "CAN NOT BE MORE EXCITED FOR THE SOON TO BE MR & MRS PHELPS," she wrote.
Phelps' coach, Bob Bowman, earlier this month said that he plans to return to competition this April, after a six-month USA Swimming suspension following a DUI arrest. Phelps has yet to announce if he will make a run for the 2016 Rio Olympics.
