Blake Shelton may be "The Voice's" most seasoned coach, but newcomers to the spinning chairs still manage to surprise him every so often.

This season, rookie coach Gwen Stefani was the shocker.

"I had never met Gwen, and I didn't know anybody that knew her, either," Shelton said in a chat with Hoda Kotb and Kathie Lee Gifford on TODAY Friday.

When Kathie Lee said that the “Hollaback Girl” singer is known for having a quiet personality, Shelton admitted this had made him uneasy.

“I was like, 'Oh, my gosh. She’s gonna be, like, a freak or something,'” Shelton recalled.

(He added that new coach Pharrell Williams arrived with less mystery: “I had met him, and I knew he was a really nice guy.”)

Once Shelton met Stefani, he learned the truth about her.

“She is the most normal person I have met in Hollywood yet — and I’m including Carson,” Shelton laughed.

Also totally normal for Shelton? A new hit record. Shelton performed “Just South of Heaven,” a single off his ninth chart-topping studio album, “Bringing Back the Sunshine.”

"The Voice" airs Mondays and Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET on NBC.
