Canadian rock band Arcade Fire was the shock winner of the Grammy for album of the year on Sunday, beating favored contender Eminem.

The group was honored for its chart-topping album "The Suburbs," and excitedly closed the ceremony with an unscheduled performance.

The other nominees were Lady Antebellum's "Need You Now," Eminem's "Recovery," Lady Gaga's "The Fame Monster," and Katy Perry's "Teenage Dream."

Eminem had been favored to dominate the Grammys, but ended up with just two prizes after receiving 10 nominations.

The 53rd annual Grammy Awards were presented in Los Angeles.
