According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more than half of all car seats are installed incorrectly — and that can mean the difference between life and death.

To show the correct way to install a car seat, TODAY national investigative correspondent Jeff Rossen and the Rossen Reports team set up a safety checkpoint with the help of Lorrie Walker from Safe Kids. The results were revealing, as parents discovered such issues as straps and seats that were too loose and unattached tethers.

Similar car spot checks happen all across the country, but if you can't make it to one of them, you can consult a step-by-step guide on how to install your child's car seat here.
