In an economy where folks are being forced to tighten their belts but are still spending on their children, the unlikely fashion trend of skinny jeans for toddlers has given the children’s apparel industry a shot in the arm. As reported in this article in the Wall Street Journal, certain designers are capitalizing on the “Mini-Me” mentality of fashion-conscious parents by crafting children’s clothing based on styles popular with adults. Suffice to say, OshKosh this is not. While sales have been up (Gap’s line of skinny styles make up for 40 percent of their clothes for infant and toddler girls), the question has been raised as to whether these clothes are really appropriate. Do we need to project our culture’s preoccupation with slimness on children so young? What do you think? Do you outfit your toddler in skinny jeans? And if not, why not?
