Happy hours are a great idea in general but it doesn't really get any better than one with free beverages.

Usually, when happy hour rolls around it signals the end of a work day. But for those who need to stay caffeinated throughout the afternoon, Starbucks' latest Happy Hour kicks off at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 16.

This week, happy hour at the coffee chain means you can score a buy-one-get-one free iced drink deal. So if you buy one iced beverage, whether it's an iced coffee, iced latte, iced macchiato or iced tea, you (or a friend) can enjoy an additional beverage on the house.

The offer excludes Frappuccinos, ready-to-drink Refreshers, Reserves, hot beverages, juices, milk and bottled beverages. But everything else is up for grabs as long as you buy an iced drink, sized grande or larger.

In March, Starbucks announced that it was expanding its happy hour program to include a wide variety of drinks. This year, however, the happy hour offering is invite-only (meaning you just have to sign up online) but the coffee chain often gives out great discounts, like 50 percent off select beverages throughout the week. For example, last week's deal featured $3 Frappuccinos, which are usually $5 or more, on Friday.

Here's how to get on the list: Go to Starbucks' Happy Hour website, add in your info and you'll receive a code to show to baristas at any participating location. You will also get the deals automatically when signing into Starbucks' free Wi-Fi or by signing into the Starbucks mobile app.

The promotion is ongoing so people who sign up will be getting more updates and discounts in the coming weeks.
