Sweltering temperatures didn't stop one Virginia boy from delivering a refreshing surprise to his neighborhood mailman.
On a day when the heat index reached 105 degrees last week, 8-year-old Carmine McDaniel, of Newport News, stocked a cooler full of Gatorade and water and left it out for his mail carrier.
Carmine's mom, Terra, recorded the mailman's reaction and posted it on Facebook, where it received thousands of views and several comments from people inspired to do the same.
"Thank god, thank you," the postman says in the video as he snags a couple ice-cold drinks. "Oh my god, yes! Whew."
Terra told TODAY it was the boy's idea.
“Carmine and I were aware how hot it was, and he came up with the idea of giving the mailman something to drink on hot summer days," Terra told TODAY.
And they plan to keep the cooler stocked. Carmine now plans to help other workers forced to bear the punishing Virginia heat, like the UPS deliveryman and the city's sanitation workers.
"Ever since this, it’s opened up his mind to help others who work outside in hot conditions," Terra said.
“He’s a really selfless 8-year-old," Terra said. "He’s an old soul.”
The mailman, Henry Bailey, told local ABC13 he appreciated the gesture.
"It makes it worthwhile," he said.
