'Drop Dead Diva's' big appeal? Love that stands 'the test of time'

Lifetime's out-of-body show "Drop Dead Diva" is about to kick off its sixth and final season. Stars Brooke Elliott and Margaret Cho stopped by TODAY Thursday to discuss just what's made the unlikely hit so appealing.

"We have an amazing history with the show because we were canceled ... was it two years ago? Yeah," Cho, who plays legal assistant Teri explained. "And then we were somehow resurrected."

According to Cho, it's the audience's love for Elliott and her "humble" performance as dead-model-turned-lawyer Jane Bingham that's the key to the show's success. But Elliott has another idea. It's love — true love.

"Yeah, I think it's the romance," she said. "I think (it's) the idea of: Does love stand the test of time? … Does it survive different circumstances, different situations, different experiences? Can love be that deep of a soul love? I don't know. I think that we're all kind of wanting that."

Jane has certainly been wanting and waiting for love on "Diva." Since season one, she's been yearning for her former self's fiance, but circumstances (and rules from Above) have kept her and soul mate Grayson (Jackson Hurst) — who doesn't realize his love is back in another body — apart. They've come close to reuniting before, but perhaps never as close as where the season five finale left off.

Find out whether true love does conquer all when "Drop Dead Diva" returns for its final season on March 23 at 9 p.m. on Lifetime.
