The man who claimed to have had a one-night stand with Clay Aiken now says he’s sorry he blabbed.

John Paulus, the former Green Beret who took his tale to the National Enquirer, isn’t retracting the story — but he now says he “regrets” going public with it. “I regret defying the trust of Clay;” Paulus writes on his blog. “I regret hurting him, his family and his fans; I regret that I started a blog that ridiculed him. ... I apologize to Clay for that and I hope he will accept.” Aiken’s rep didn’t return The Scoop’s calls for comment.

Paulus also claims that in a “very callow and selfish moment” he passed along the story to the National Enquirer, then changed his mind and tried to get the tab to kill it, and even took legal measures to stop it, sending a cease-and-desist letter to the Enquirer. That’s not quite the way the editors at the tab remember it. “Our reporter couldn’t get him off the phone,” National Enquirer editor David Perel told The Scoop. Perel says he doesn’t remember Paulus having a legal letter sent, but says even if there was one, Paulus is “completely distorting” the story. “It’s not a situation where he told the story one time,” Perel said. “He engaged in multiple conversations with our reporter. He couldn’t stop talking, and then he talked to reporters after it was out.”

A is for Apple, and acting
Apparently, the Apple didn’t fall too far from the tree. Gwyneth Paltrow says that her 2-year-old daughter, Apple, seems bitten by the acting bug.

“My daughter can be quite dramatic. So I think there is a chance that she’ll do something like that (acting),” Paltrow said, reports World Entertainment News Network.

Meanwhile, though, the toddler is getting plenty of exposure to her father’s profession. Paltrow is bringing little Apple and kid brother Moses touring with their dad’s band, Coldplay, reports the London Mirror.

Notes from all over
Nicole Richie’s father, Lionel, reportedly promised his daughter and some friends a Caribbean yacht cruise if she’d put on weight. “Lionel thought some of Nicole’s pals were encouraging her to stay skinny,” a source told the London Sun. “So he thought if he gave them an incentive to get Nicole to put weight on then that would help her.”  ... If the Lex Luther character from “Superman Returns” seems somewhat familiar, there’s a reason. Kevin Spacey says he used Ken Lay, the convicted former boss of Enron, as his inspiration for the villain. ...  Paris Hilton thinks that the cut-off jeans and low-cut top that pregnant Britney Spears wore when she was interviewed by Matt Lauer wasn’t the wisest wardrobe choice. The partying heiress, not known for modesty in her own dress, opines: “She should have worn a really cute maternity dress.”
