'Glee' may not reveal how Cory Monteith's character dies

After "Glee" star Cory Monteith died of a drug overdose in July, show creator Ryan Murphy revealed that the actor's popular character, Finn Hudson, would also meet his end. But in a new interview with Deadline, the show boss said that though lovable jock Finn would die, fans may never know how it happened."We are not telling you yet, or maybe not at all, how that character died," Murphy said. After "Glee" star Cory Monteith died of a drug overdose in July, show creator Ryan Murphy revealed that the actor's popular character, Finn Hudson, would also meet his end.

But in a new interview with Deadline, the show boss said that though lovable jock Finn would die, fans may never know how it happened.

"We are not telling you yet, or maybe not at all, how that character died," Murphy said. "The idea being, how somebody died is interesting and maybe morbid, but we say very early on in the episode, 'This episode is about a celebration of that character's life.' That might be weird for some people, but it felt really exploitative to do it any other way."

Though viewers may never learn how Finn dies, Murphy said one scenario is definitely out: drug overdose.

"At one point, we were going to have his character die after an accidental drug overdose — that was something we had considered," Murphy said. "But we have decided that we're not going to have him pass from that."

The decision may come to a surprise to some, as "Glee" has never shied from using difficult subjects as teachable moments. In Monteith's final episode, Finn was partying hard with Puck, which could have set up Finn's death.

But the decision doesn't mean the show won't address the way in which the 31-year-old actor died. Kevin Reilly, Fox's chairman of entertainment, told reporters earlier this month that the cast will film PSAs about drug abuse, which will air during the tribute episode.

The memorial episode, which is shooting this week, will be the third one in the upcoming season. The show is kicking off with two planned Beatles episodes.

"I think it turned out to be a lovely tribute, and it's a very heartfelt look at how young people grieve," Murphy told Deadline. "We loved Cory and we loved Finn, and it feels like a huge loss and a huge heartache not to have either of them around."

"Glee" returns for its fifth season on Sept. 26 on Fox.
