Valentine's Day just might be the most controversial holiday of the year. The coupled up can embrace it as a celebration of their love, but what does that mean for the rest of the world?

It means singleness is front and center on what's supposed to be the most romantic day of the year.

Rather than mope about it by themselves, the unattached have taken to expressing loneliness in the most 21st century way possible: with GIFs.

According to Tenor, a GIF keyboard and search engine, the word "alone" is searched for more on Feb. 14 than on any other day of the year. The spike is so drastic that the search tops out at over 455 percent more than on an average day on the site.

Additionally, searches for "crying" and "eye roll" register considerably higher numbers on the festival of love with increases of 144 percent and 441 percent, respectively.

With plenty of pop culture references to pull from, the opportunities to communicate loneliness are seemingly endless. From popular movies like "Home Alone" to obscure TV moments, Tenor also ranked the top five GIFs for "alone," with the No. 1 GIF featuring none other than SpongeBob SquarePants drinking coffee by himself.

The silver lining? If you find yourself searching for "alone" or "crying" on Valentine's Day, it turns out you're far from alone, and actually in good company!
