How coconuts are being used to protect shorelines in New Jersey
The shoreline in Neptune, New Jersey, is being threatened by rising sea levels and erosion. Now, a restoration project is using a wall of coconuts husks to protect the beach. “Coconut fibers are natural and ultimately, after they’ve done their job of stabilizing the beach so that the grasses can grow, they’ll disappear. They’ll go into the environment," says Tom Dillingham, the executive director of the American Littoral Society.
