Leave it to a meteorologist to know exactly how to handle a high wind warning that took effect in Chicago this past weekend — and not just from inside a TV studio.
NBC Chicago's own Byron Miranda used a combination of weather smarts, common sense and chivalry to rescue an elderly woman who was having a difficult time walking down the street because of the intense winds.
The woman appears to be smiling in the first few frames of the video that's been making the rounds on social media, seemingly amused by the extreme nature of the weather. But it isn't long before she realizes the situation is more dangerous than it initially seemed. A powerful gust of wind almost sends her flying headfirst into a building column, and her expression changes dramatically.

Chicago was under the weather warning until 6 p.m. Friday, and wind gusts were expected to be in excess of 50 mph.
"We were out covering how dangerous it is to cross the street on Michigan Avenue on such a windy day and Mabel, my photographer, spotted the woman having difficulties. I asked her if she needed help because she looked frightened,” Miranda told NBC Chicago.
As seen in the video, the weather expert jumps to the woman's aid, helping her hail and make her way toward a cab.

"I don't think we can do it," she says at one point, heading back toward a building for protection. But Miranda persists, flagging down a few other kind and brave souls, including one good Samaritan who loses his Phillies baseball cap at around :49 in the video (Miranda later indicated the man recovered his hat).
"I'm just happy I was able to help that woman," Miranda said.
