Swim safety 101: Protecting small children in and around the water

03:29

Certified infant swim instructor Michael Petrella joins TODAY to share critical ways to keep children and families safe around water this summer. TODAY received this statement from Newell Brands Inc.: After viewing the segment on TODAY on Swim Safety 101, Newell Brands Inc. wanted to address some of the comments made around the safety of our products. Puddle Jumper® Life Jackets are carefully and thoughtfully engineered and tested to U.S. Coast Guard requirements to offer the maximum comfort, flexibility, range of motion and in-water safety and stability for children. Our life jackets are designed to provide safety in any water situation (pools, lakes, beaches, and etc.), when properly used, helping to protect children learning to swim. We stand behind our products and promote teaching children proper swimming and floating techniques, even with the use of a Puddle Jumper® Life Jacket. Children should always have active adult supervision when on, in or near the water, and the use of a Puddle Jumper® Life Jacket or any other flotation device should not replace swim survival lessons and water safety education. Always check the product label to make sure your child’s weight is within the weight range marked on the life jacket and read the attached placards for more information about fit. To learn about different types of flotation devices and their specific intended uses, visit www.puddlejumper.com/watersafety or www.uscgboating.org and www.wearitlifejacket.com.
