In the past 20 years, avocado consumption has skyrocketed in the U.S. Mexico is the world's leading avocado producer, but the first Hass avocado (the most popular variety enjoyed today) was first grown in Los Angeles in the 1920s. To learn more about this creamy green fruit, Al Roker visits three unique family-run operations in California where avocados are essential. At Rancho Vasquez in Azusa, Al learns how avocados first made their way from Mexico to Southern California. Then it's off to Avila’s El Ranchito restaurant to mix up some stellar guacamole. At Holbox, James Beard Award-nominated chef Gilberto Centina shows Al how to make vibrant seafood dishes inspired by his childhood on the Yucatán Peninsula.
