Dr. Anthony Fauci tells TODAY that the apparent plateauing in coronavirus cases is “good news,” but says he doesn’t think it’s related to vaccine distribution. He says that there is “enough cushion” in current vaccines “that we still consider them effective against the U.K. strain and the South Africa strain” of the coronavirus, but adds, “we really need to begin to upgrade the vaccines.” He endorses President Biden’s travel ban against South Africa and says that double masking “likely does” help protect against the mutant strains: “It just makes common sense that it would be more effective.”Jan. 25, 2021
