Summer is the season of sweat, water and running makeup. And don't even get us started on crying at weddings!

Plenty of products claim to be long-lasting, but how do you know what really works? Professional makeup artist Ashlee Glazer stopped by TODAY Friday with top tips for buying makeup that can stand up to the test.

1. Foundation and setting spray

When shopping for a foundation, look for "waterproof" or "24-hour" on the label. And if you're not putting on sunscreen and primer before you go for the foundation, it's time to start!

Better yet, Glazer recommends creating a mixture of equal parts foundation and sunscreen. The zinc oxide in sunscreen will help make your foundation even more waterproof and give you a lighter coverage. Apply with your fingers or a damp sponge for a beautifully natural look.

When it comes to setting spray, look for the words "long-wear," "oil-free" or "oil control." This will create a sweat-proof barrier on your skin. Some sprays even have patented temperature-control technology to ensure the look really lasts.

2. Bronzer

Bronzer is the unsung hero of summer makeup and spray bronzer is its innovative new iteration. It's lightweight, water-resistant and can give you a great airbrushed look. When looking for the perfect product, keep an eye out for the words "aerosol," "mist" or "airbrush finish."

To apply, spray in the shape of an "x" to create the ideal cheek contour. You'll want to avoid shimmer, but look for a formula that works for both face and body. It's an easy way to cover up veins or cellulite.

3. Mascara and eyeliner

When it comes to long-lasting eye makeup, look for wax as an ingredient, like beeswax. This will help keep color attach to lashes and prevent smudging.

Glazer recommends only putting liner and mascara on the top lid and fewer coats than usual for a fresh look during a hot day. And don't be afraid to try bright and bold colors to really enhance the summer feel.

Her top tip: Be sure to allow your makeup time to dry!

4. Lipstick

Lipstick is a great way to add a pop of color to any outfit. Look for the keywords "long-wear," "resistant," "kiss-proof," "matte finish" or "stain" when shopping.

Lip stains and matte textures in particular will be your best friends this summer. Stains are great for long-wear without that sticky finish, while trendy matte textures won't feather or run.

To finish your look, top it off with an SPF lip balm for added moisture and protection.

Some final tips: Glazer says to look for products with jojoba oil and beeswax, which can help retain moisture.
