Tassels and pompoms are the must-have fashion accessory for summer. Sandals, beach totes, necklaces and more are getting a punch of color with these fun add-ons. And the great news is, you can make them yourself! (We promise, it's easier than it sounds.)
With inexpensive materials from the craft store, like embroidery thread and yarn, you can customize your color palette and adorn items you already own to make them feel fresh for the new season. In a few simple steps, we turned basic sandals, bags and swimsuit cover-ups into festive, on-trend summer staples.
For the more advanced DIYer, create an oversized leather key chain that looks straight from the store. Check out the steps and supplies below!
Beach bag with fringe tassels

What you need:
- Embroidery floss
- Beach bag (I found this style at Target)
What to do:
1. Start making the tassels by taking the wrapper off of one color of embroidery floss and folding it in half.

2. Tie a piece of string around the middle and double knot.

3. Tie a second piece of sting around the top section and double knot again (approximately 1/4 inch from the fold).

4. Cut a straight line at the bottom edge to create the fringe.

5. Then, go crazy! Make as many (or as few) tassels as you'd like in the colors of your choosing and tie onto your bag wherever you wish.

And hit the street in style!

Pompom sandals

What you need:
- Hollow bead pompoms
- Regular pompoms
- Wood beads
- Glue gun
- Lace-up sandals (I found this style Target)
What to do:
1. Unlace the sandals, then string on the hollow pompoms and beads as you re-lace them.

2. Add more pompoms by hot gluing them to the beads.

Then, you're on your way!

Pompom swim cover-up

What you need:
- Pom-pom trim
- Fabric glue
- Cover up (I found this style at Marshalls)
What to do:
1. Working a few inches at a time, add fabric glue to the edge of your cover-up and place the pompom trim on top of it. Continue gluing the trim to the edge of your cover-up.

3. Let it dry completely.
And you're ready to hit the pool or beach!

Leather tassel key chain

What you need:
- Turquoise leather trim
- Ribbon
- Lobster claw clasp
- Rope
- Glue gun
- Chalk

What to do:
1. Depending on the size you want your tassel, cut your leather into a rectangle (the piece above is 8 inches by 3 1/2 inches).
2. Using chalk on the non-leather side, mark a line an inch from the top.

3. Next, draw vertical lines 1/4 inch apart.
4. Cut each vertical line.

5. On the leather side, glue thin ribbon pieces to both the top of your tassel as well as an inch down (right where the fringe starts).

6. Loop 3 inches of rope though the key chain hardware and hot glue the ends to the non-leather side of the rectangle.

7. Next, roll the leather starting at the rope, adding more glue along the way.

8. Once it's completed rolled together, let it dry.

Clip onto your bag or keys and you're ready to hit the road!
