If your marriage lasts 72 days, are you required to return the engagement ring?

It's a heated debate on the interwebs, with reality-TV addicts debating whether Kim Kardashian ought to return the ridiculously large, $2 million diamond ring she received from now-ex-husband Kris Humphries.

TMZ reports that Kim's pre-nup included a clause that requires her to buy the ring back from Kris for its original price if the two divorce. However, Kim's mother, Kris Jenner, thinks the ring should stay with its rightful Kardashian owner.

"A gift is a gift," Kris said last Thursday on "Fox and Friends." "If you look at the etiquette books, it says keep a present." Yet according to etiquette expert Harriette Cole, traditional protocol is to return the ring if the union has lasted less than a year (particularly if it is the groom's family heirloom).

Kim is currently in Minnesota, reportedly trying to smooth things over with Kris. No news yet on what she intends to do with the ring, but perhaps she has a plan? Maybe she'll donate it to the state of Minnesota as a peace offering, as she always seemed to pooh-pooh the idea of ever moving there with Kris.
