A beauty queen in the running to become Miss USA has stepped down after being charged with three counts of identity theft.

Shaletta Porterfield, 26, of Madison won the Miss Wisconsin USA title last year.

She was due to compete for the Miss USA crown in Las Vegas next month, NBC station WTMJ reported. However, Porterfield resigned on Friday after being charged in Dane County in April.

Attorney Robert Nagel said Porterfield acknowledges she made a mistake, WTMJ reported.

"It's unfortunate, but she has a lot going for her, and she's ready to move on," Nagel told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

First runner-up Jordan Marie Morkin, will now represent the state at the Miss USA pageant, the newspaper reported.
