As President Trump addressed the joint session of Congress, first lady Melania Trump looked on from above.
The former model is no stranger to bold fashion statements and Tuesday night was no different.
The first lady chose an encrusted black suit from the Michael Kors Spring 2017 collection for the evening. The demure color was accented by a touch of sparkle in the form of sequined embroidery and beading throughout the skirt and jacket and topped with a wide black belt; the same style shown at the runway presentation.
The tailored outfit is full of '80s references — like a plunging neckline and exaggerated shoulders — but the monochromatic aesthetic paired with her sleek, polished hairstyle offer a more sophisticated take on the era.
Trump has made a point to wear prominent American designers for official events, including the powder blue Ralph Lauren suit she wore for her husband's inauguration.
The first lady was joined by her step-daughter Ivanka Trump, who went for a more colorful look. The businesswoman wore a fuchsia dress by French designer Roland Mouret. The sophisticated look featured an asymmetrical neckline and a subtle peplum detail at the waist.
