Jenna Kutcher's Instagram page is all about self-love. It's a place where she spreads body positivity and opens up to her more than 240,000 followers about learning to love her curves.
So when an Instagram user sent her a direct message wondering about her marriage to her husband, an online health coach, she was initially "taken aback." The 29-year-old photographer and Podcast host shared the story last week in a post that's racked up more than 70,000 likes as of publish time.
"Someone once slid into my DMs and told me they couldn’t believe I had managed to land a guy as good looking as @kickingitwithkutch," Kutcher wrote in a caption, alongside a photo of she and Drew posing on a Hawaii beach. "Why should I, a curvy girl get him? ... This man has embraced every curve, every dimple, pound and pimple for the last ten years and has always me reminded me that I’m beautiful even when my inner dialogue doesn’t match."
Kutcher said she dismissed the critic immediately.
"I wrote back and said, 'What does his body have to do with our marriage?'" Kutcher told TODAY Style. "But the way she said it was somewhat kind. It wasn't just a troll — it was someone who genuinely thought we didn't belong together because of how we looked. ... Online, the critics don't get to know your story or your heart."
As for her husband, Kutcher said Drew, 31, reacted to the message with poise.
"He just laughed," Kutcher said. "He's so levelheaded and supportive. He doesn't think twice about us being together. It's (all) just a continuation of the fact that we are such visual people who are trained to define beauty by what's in the media."
The couple, now married for seven years, has stuck together through it all. That includes a tough journey toward starting a family, which Kutcher has documented openly on social media. As a woman, she said, infertility plays a role in body image.
"Processing what starting a family would look like for us had me analyzing my body," Kutcher added. "I had mental blocks with what I'm capable of and what I'm worthy of."
After a second miscarriage, Kutcher turned to social media to share their story. The entire journey has been an important part of her marriage.
"It's given us a voice in sharing our story, in hopes that others will feel less alone," Kutcher said.
With this recent viral post, Kutcher just hopes she can just continue being a positive role model.
"Feel your worth through yourselves and not through other people," she said as a message to her followers. "(I hope) to show women you are worthy of being loved the way you are. No one or no critic can define your worth."
Then she added: "And we're so much more than our bodies!"
