British model Neelam Gill is the new face of Abercrombie & Fitch, a brand that was for years criticized for lack of diversity in its advertising.

Gill, who is of Indian descent, wrote on Instagram that she's "so proud" to represent the fashion label.

"This is a huge achievement for me, not only because I'm the first Indian to model for the brand, but because I worked on the shop floor in Hollister [owned by Abercrombie & Fitch] for two years whilst I was studying," she added. "I'd go to work and I never imagined the models displayed on the wall could be me one day. Dreams do come true."

Two years ago, Gill, 20, was also the first Indian girl to be cast in a Burberry campaign.

Since then, she's been a rising star in the modeling world, working for brands from Karen Millen to Topshop and walking in major fashion week shows, like Kanye West x Adidas. She's done photo shoots for leading fashion magazines including Lucky, Glamour and Elle.

Gill, who is from Coventry but now lives in London, also hangs with an A-list fashion crew that includes top model Jourdan Dunn, and is rumored to be dating Zayn Malik, formerly of One Direction.

Abercrombie & Fitch says hiring Gill is just one of many changes the brand is making, along with making its ads less sexy.

"We announced a number of changes a few months ago, which were based on our customer's feedback," Craig Brommers, senior vice president of marketing, said in a statement to TODAY.com. "One of those changes was the elimination of sexualized imagery. As we evolve the brand in terms of product and marketing, making the consumer aware of these changes is important. Although we are still on a journey of change, we feel that we have made developments in our brand creative, and this shoot starring Neelam Gill has been a step forward for us."
