If you’ve ever secretly thought there was something stylish (and even a little sexy) about a librarian’s wardrobe — this look is for you! Boho-chic takes a back seat to this season’s sophisticated styles, as relaxed, loose layers are replaced with classic tailored pieces. So pull your pencil skirt, button-down blouse and pretty loafer-pumps to the front of your closet, because you'll be needing them for both work and weekends! Bobbie Thomas, Today Style editor and author of the Buzz for “In Touch Weekly,” takes a look at this season’s ladylike fashions.

Fit and flare
Forget the sweet smocks and baby-doll dresses of seasons past — this fall we’re moving away from mod, girly styles and embracing shapely silhouettes that celebrate a womanly figure. Pencil skirts and flared hemlines highlight an hourglass shape and flatter curves. And more body-conscious than the bubble, the fitted shift dress is the LBD of the season. Also consider cropped jackets and high waistlines in order to play with proportions, or opt for opaque tights and platforms to elongate the frame. What you saw on TODAY:

"Forever" items
Never has your work wardrobe been more on-trend. “Smart” styles are taking over the racks to fuel a movement toward “proper” dressing. Suits are standing out as a chic choice, rather than a stuffy solution, with silhouettes that allow for creative dressing. For example, feel free to layer a long-sleeved blouse over a cropped jacket, or belt your blazer for a fitted alternative. In addition to suits, the classic cardigan and tie-neck blouse are signature pieces for this ladylike look. Remember, your 9-to-5 wardrobe will serve you well this season, so embrace these power pieces and play just as hard as you work! What you saw on TODAY:

Fabric and colorEverything old is new again, but modern designers are reinventing this refined look with fresh fabrics and color combinations. While outfits look pulled together overall, contrast is key. Try mixing textures for visual interest and balance soft materials with sharp, defined pieces. For example, satins and chiffons add elegance, and can even work for day when paired with tweed. Color can (and should!) be used as an accessory, as bold brights can “wake up” a wardrobe that consists of shades of gray and other subdued colors. Unexpected combinations of neutral tones, such as charcoal and taupe, or black and navy, fused with shots of hot hues, will feel fresh. What you saw on TODAY:

Finishing touches
Polish off your look with ladylike elements and luxe accents. From hats and gloves to matching bags and shoes, accessories add sophistication and style, while embossed croc and hardware have a powerful presence. Belts are now a wardrobe staple and will help you take shape this season! Wide, corsetlike options will provide structure and support, while slim, skinny versions will not only look refined, they’ll help you to define. And last but not least, consider your coat! This piece literally puts the finishing touch on your outfit every day, so look for special details or a daring color, and invest in something you love! What you saw on TODAY:
