Forget all of the stereotypes about crochet and macrame — it's not just for DIY masters and crafty at-home seamstresses anymore. Just in time for summer, these open-weave, 1970s staples are making a major comeback.

For those feeling especially bold, Zara, H&M and Mango have resurrected some seriously retro crochet looks in the form of rainbow-colored tank tops and strappy dresses that you can easily describe as “groovy.” (In a good way!) One crochet mini dress — that looks like almost like a grandmother's throw blanket — would look incredibly cool over a black swimsuit as an alternative coverup; or, it could double as a casual cocktail dress when paired with an updo and heels a la Zoe Saldana.

If colorful crochet isn’t quite your style, ease into the trend with a sweet macrame clutch or crossbody bag. Or, try a pair of white crochet sneakers to add just the right touch of texture to any outfit.

The key to making this trend feel fresh and not costume-y is all about keeping the rest of the look modern. Skip the bell bottoms and flare jeans and leave the John Lennon-like round sunglasses at home. Opt for sleek, minimalist sandals, a pair of classic denim shorts or a shift dress to keep crochet clothes feeling 2016 instead of 1976.
