9 hair-raising eyebrow trends from 'guybrows' to bleach

Eyebrow trends have been around for decades, but we're seeing an onslaught of crazy ideas as our brows take center stage.

Eyebrow trends, fads and fashions have changed throughout the decades, but we're suddenly seeing an onslaught of crazy ideas. What do you think of these wild brow trends?

The bleached brow

Although celebrity brow guru Ramy Gafni says he “personally detests this look," he acknowledges that it's a great way to garner attention. “The idea is to bleach your brows to a near skin tone so that it looks like you have no eyebrows,” says Gafni. You may recognize this look from seeing it on famous faces like Lady Gaga, Kim Kardashian and Kelly Osbourne.

Brightly colored brows

Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting debuted pastel pink brows in May, but everyday women were onto the colored brow trend long beforehand, says YouBeauty health and beauty expert Claire Hannum.

Here are how some women are trying the trend:

The thick, ungroomed brow

“In the zest to emulate model Cara Delevingne’s naturally thick, heavy eyebrows some celebrities have gone overboard [with] heavy, but messy ungroomed brows that include obvious strays and look a little un-kept,” says Gafni. Great celebrity examples of this trend are Jennifer Lopez and Sophia Vegara. “Compare photos of then from a few years ago to photos from this year and you’ll see great examples of this trend,” he says.

Sleek brow

No more drawing in your brows! “This tinted ink gel fills in sparse areas with tiny angled strokes that give a 3D affect to resemble your natural hair growth and color. Sweat and water resistant, this treatment lasts about 3 weeks giving you full and shaped brows no makeup required,” says Ramona Azcona of She Winks Lash Studio, a full service eyelash and eyebrow extensions salon in New York City.

The heavily penciled brow

This trend is a nod to the heavily penciled and arched eyebrows of the 1950’s and 60’s, says Gafni. “It’s a glamorous look that is created by heavily applying a brow filler (pencil) in an overly dark shade and not blending the pencil in too much so the result is an obviously made-up, overly dramatic eyebrow. It’s a nod to stars like Elizabeth Taylor and Grace Kelly,” says Gafni. We see this trend on celebrities like Dita Von Teese, Demi Lovato and Camilla Belle.

Eyebrow bling

Eyebrow rings are a thing of the 90's and should be left there, says celebrity brow specialist Joey Healy). “Rodarte created quite a peak in interest with their recent show. The responsibility here - the return of grunge. At one point Fergie had her right eyebrow pierced with a curved barbell but stopped wearing it after she became a mother,” Healy says. It certainly gives off a rough edge!

Eyebrow extensions

No brows? No problem, create your own brow with these tiny hair fibers are perfectly matched to your natural hair color and texture. “Once selected they are then precisely placed following your natural hair growth with a transparent glue to lengthen and shape your brows. They are sweat and water resistant and last about 3-4 weeks with proper care,” says Azcona.

Brow Transplants

With bold-browed celebs like Lily Collins and Cara Delavigne, women are seeking eyebrow transplants in order to get the fuller brow look that has become the latest trend for the face. “I often see people for eyebrow transplants because they suffer from spotty hair growth or thyroid issues, which is a larger health concern causing people to lose hair. Also, people seek eyebrow transplants because they have the desire to alter the shape of their eyebrows, or they typically cannot just stop over-plucking/altering them themselves which ultimately over time damages the hair follicles and hair growth all together,” says Hair Restoration Expert, Dr. Robert Dorin.

Lily Collins (pictured above) has enviable eyebrows that have inspired many to try the transplant treatment.

Essentially, says Dr. Dorin, the procedure works by taking a small amount of hair from the patient’s scalp to the eyebrow region. The eyebrow position must be artistically designed and then filled in with single and double hair grafts that are placed at specific angles to make the end result look like a natural brow. It takes 2-3 months for the hair to start to grow with about 11-12 months before it reaches full development. Treatment can cost anywhere from $2,000 and up.

Guybrows

"We think of men's eyebrow shaping as tailoring. Just as you need to tailor a great suit, you need to tailor your brows. Eyebrow waxing and shaping is the best grooming for your brows to make you look brighter, cleaner and sharper, because the wax gets fine hairs that tweezing misses! Most men are interested in grooming their brows but hesitate on taking the big step in fear that they'll end up looking feminine, so we we have a male eyebrow wax service called “masculine tailoring," says Summer Vasilas, co-founder of Waxing the City. Keep in mind, shaping men’s brows is different than shaping women’s. We focus on the middle and adding a slight bend vs. an arch. Also, we recommend avoiding blunt trimming for a more natural look. Guybrows is a trend that stays away from being too sculptured," says Vasilas.
