Watching hoops

Fighting for a cause

Knighted
In a first for the elder royal son, Prince William took on his first formal knighthood ceremony filling in for Queen Elizabeth II Oct. 17, 2013 at Buckingham Palace, London. He dubbed his first knight — Sir Kenneth Gibson, honored for his work in education — by taking King George VI’s sword from an attendant and carefully tapping a kneeling Gibson on each shoulder. He then went on to dub 87 more recipients.


Bend it like William
In September, 2013, Prince William teamed up with retired soccer player David Beckham and retired basketball player Yao Ming to tape public service announcements against the illegal trade of wildlife products — specifically, rhino horn and elephant ivory. The PSAs were scheduled to air later in the year.


Surprise appearance
A group of competitors preparing for an ultramarathon in Wales received a surprise on Friday when the Duchess of Cambridge, 31, made her first public appearance since the birth of Prince George. Kate joined her husband, Prince William, to ceremonially start a round of the Ring O’Fire Ultramarathon on the island of Anglesey, where the royal couple lived at the time on August 30, 2013.

Animal advocate
Britain's Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, feeds a 5-year-old black rhino called Zawadi as he visits Port Lympne Wild Animal Park in Kent on June 6, 2012. Prince William, Duke of Cambridge was visiting the park to meet staff and rhinos involved in a translocation project. The Aspinall Foundation along with the Tusk Trust and the George Adamson Trust are combining forces to stage a rare translocation of three captive-born black rhinos to Mkomazi National Park in Tanzania in order to rejuvenate numbers of the endangered species in the area.

Official business

Happy couple
Prince William and Kate Middleton visit the Trearddur Bay Lifeboat Station in Anglesey, Wales on Feb. 24, 2011, where they christened a lifeboat. It was one of the couple's only official appearances together since announcing their engagement, and Kate was warmly received by both the people and the press.

Romantic getaway
Prince William and then-girlfriend Kate Middleton use a T-bar drag lift while skiing in Klosters, Switzerland on March 19, 2008. Skiing is a favorite sport for both the prince and Middleton and the pair frequently take breaks at ski resorts around Europe.

Flight training

Remembering Diana
Prince Charles, along with his two sons Princes Harry and William, arrive on Aug. 31, 2007 for a service in memory of Diana, Princess of Wales, on the 10th anniversary of her death. Earlier that summer, the princes organized a huge outdoor concert in Diana's memory.





Graduation day

The media were invited to the photo shoot to mark the start of Prince William's gap year before beginning university. It was also a thank you to the media who respected Prince William's privacy while he attended Eton.






On the piste
Prince Charles skis with his sons, Princes William and Harry in Klosters, Switzerland on Feb. 18, 1994. The resort is a favorite of Prince Charles' and he frequently took his sons skiing there as children. In 2009, Prince William returned to the resort with his then-girlfriend, Kate Middleton.



Natural born speaker
Prince William chats with the press on his 2nd birthday at London's Kensington Palace. Speaking about press coverage of his life and relationships, Prince William told TODAY's Matt Lauer in 2007, "[I] occasionally see a bit of it here and there, but you just let it wash over you."



First photos
The photographer who took the first images of Prince William as a baby has just discovered several unseen shots of the Prince lost nearly 30 years ago. Ian Pelham-Turner, who ironically now has studios opposite Kensington Palace, took the baby pictures in 1982.
"I got a random phone call a few days ago and found out that in the region of 100,000 pictures had been discovered in boxes in an old building near the London Wall. It appears that they had been left by former agents of mine," he said in a press release. "When I opened the first box the images of Diana were the first to come out – just days before Prince William’s wedding."
