Shannen Doherty through the years: A look back

Shannen Doherty was born on April 12, 1971 in Memphis, Tennessee. Success came with guest spots on a couple TV series, including "Voyagers" and "Father Murphy." Doherty won the role of Jenny Wilder on "Little House on the Prairie " at the age of 11. She played the adopted daughter of Almanzo and Laura Ingalls Wilder.

Shannen Doherty played Kris Witherspoon on the 1986 drama series "Our House." The series starred Wilford Brimley as Gus Witherspoon, a grandfather who cares for his departed son's wife and their children. It only aired for two seasons.

Winona Ryder, Kim Walker, Lisanne Falk and Shannen Doherty starred in "Heathers." The movie is about teenage girls — three of whom are named Heather — in a clique at a fictional Ohio high school. Doherty played Heather Duke, in her first major motion picture role.

Doherty garnered worldwide attention and fame for her breakout role as Brenda Walsh on the TV series "Beverly Hills, 90210." Doherty left the show after the fourth season in 1994. Shannen Doherty married Ashley Hamilton, son of actor George Hamilton, after knowing him for only two weeks. They were married for five months before the actress filed for divorce in April 1994.

Shannen Doherty played Katherine, a psychologist who specializes in research about twins and is haunted by her dead mother's ghost, in 1994's "Almost Dead."

In 1995, Doherty joined the cast of "Mallrats," a romantic comedy about two best friends who were dumped by their girlfriends, seeking refuge in the local mall. 

Doherty was tapped to play in the TV series, "Charmed," in which she played Prue Halliwell, the oldest of three sisters who are witches. Doherty left the show in 2001 at the end of the third season, resulting in her character's death. 

Shannen Doherty and Rick Solomon married online gambling website owner Rick Salomon in 2003. The marriage was annulled after only nine months.

Doherty hosted "Scare Tactics," a hidden camera prank horror television show.

On March 1, 2010, it was announced that Doherty would be a celebrity contestant on the 10th season of "Dancing with the Stars." Doherty was paired with two-time champion Mark Ballas, but the pair was the first couple eliminated in the second week on March 30.
