Tired of mom jeans? 5 denim trends an expert recommends trying

From barrel to cargo styles, here are the top denim trends for the year.

Fashion trends may come and go but jeans will never go out of style. Regardless of their wash, cut or rise, we can always rely on a trusty pair of denim to get us through any season or wardrobe rut.

While mom jeans dominated the fashion scene in 2022, it seems a few new takes on the classic bottoms are set to take over in 2023. Style expert Melissa Garcia stopped by TODAY to share five of them, so you can start the year off on your most fashionable note yet.

From patchwork patterns to a style you likely haven't seen since the '90s, here are the denim trends you should get in on this year, according to an expert.

2023 denim trends seen on TODAY

Puddle jeans

Express Super High Waisted Wide Leg Jeans

These appropriately named jeans probably remind you of the baggy pairs that were all the rage in the 90s. Garcia says they're back with a vengeance. But, instead of letting them drag on the floor, style them with a platform boot for a modern look.

Barrel jeans

Straight-leg jeans will never go out of style, according to Garcia. However, they could use an upgrade this year. The barrel-leg silhouette is the perfect way to do it, she says. The loose fit and tapered ankle make them easy to dress up for a night out or keep a casual look for Sunday brunch.

Cargo jeans

H&M 90s Baggy High Cargo Jeans

Cargo pants are taking over! The casual style can be worn with sneakers or kitten heels, making them a versatile staple in any wardrobe, Garcia says. Recently, they've transformed into a denim hybrid that check all of the boxes for a trendy feel: They're oversized, adjustable and they have pockets. Style tip from Garcia: Throw on a leather jacket and black heels for the "ultimate" night-out look.

Two-tone jeans

New York & Company High-Waisted Color-block Wide-Leg Jeans

Dark wash? Light wash? The two-tone trend delivers the best of both worlds. An "adventurous" trend Garcia expects to see this year, she says they boast benefits for anyone with shorter legs. "The color-blocking acts like a contour for your legs and can help make them appear longer than they are!" she said.

Patchwork jeans

Hollister Ultra High-Rise Patchwork Mom Jeans

This isn't the first time patchwork patterns have been on the rise when it comes to bottoms, but Garcia says the style is a bit more thoughtful in 2023. Whether you choose to rock contrasting panels or materials, the key to pulling off this look is wearing a neutral top with minimal accessories — let the pants do the talking.
