As "Empire" costume designer Paolo Nieddu so perfectly puts it, "Not everyone can get away with what they get away with." And that is doubly true when it comes to Cookie Lyon's fierce and fearless wardrobe.
Cookie, of course, is the music-empire matriarch portrayed on "Empire" by actress Taraji P. Henson, who earned a Critic's Choice award and an Emmy nomination for the role on the prime-time soap. In Season 1 she rocked a rainbow of animal prints and over-the-top jewelry, but Nieddu promises that Season 2 will bring so much more.
"Cookie is going to evolve in Season 2 into much more of a fashion icon than she already is," the designer told TODAY. If that seems unlikely, simply look to the stunning, feathered Gucci dress she wore in a theatrical cage during the premiere episode.
As for Cookie's three sons, Nieddu is sure to distinguish their personalities through their clothing. While eldest brother Andre favors smart suits, personal style is extremely important to youngest son Hakeem. You can tell that right away from his first outfit — which includes luxurious red Maison Margiela sneakers that run a cool $895.
Jamaal, the middle child who once refused his father's money, is more understated in his style. That said, he was still raised by music royalty: He might wear a simple white T-shirt, but "it could be a $300 white T-shirt," Nieddu explained.
And that's just the beginning. Nieddu says that fans will be blown away by all of the outfits this season.
"There are going to be so many fashion moments for all of the characters that people are going to gag over," he said.
"Empire" airs at 9 p.m. ET Wednesdays on Fox.
