Dining out can be one of the biggest challenges when you're trying to lose weight. After all, temptations are everywhere, the portions are huge and the foods are typically loaded with butter, oil, sugar, starch and salt.

But here's one small thing you can do at any restaurant to prevent you from wreaking havoc on your waistline: Follow my ROSE rule.

Research the menu beforehand: Check it out online earlier in the day, pick out a healthy option and then stick to the plan when you get to the restaurant — no need to even open the menu.

Order first: You'll set a healthy tone for the rest of the table and won't be swayed by other diners' choices.

Sauces on the side: Don't be afraid to order rich dressings and sauces on the side and use no more than two tablespoons. You'll effortlessly save upwards of 150 calories each time you do this!

Enjoy! Eat slowly and most importantly, savor the overall experience, the delicious food and the company.
