Chef notes

These sweet and smoky spiced nuts are perfect host gift for the holidays. The flavors are so irresistible, it's almost impossible to stop snacking on the crunchy little morsels. They're so easy to make but leave a lasting impression.

Technique tip: Always use a timer when cooking nuts; they will burn before you know it.

Swap option: Mixed nuts are wonderful in the recipe as well.

Ingredients

  • 3 cups water
  • 6 tablespoons maple syrup
  • 3 cups pecan halves
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 2 teaspoons smoked paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper

Preparation

1.

Preheat the oven to 350 F. Bring the water and the maple syrup just to a boil in a medium saucepan over high heat, add the pecan halves and remove from the heat. Let stand 15 minutes then drain.

2.

Stir together the salt, smoked paprika and cayenne pepper in a medium bowl; add the pecans, tossing to coat. Spread in a single layer on a lightly greased 10-to-15-inch rimmed baking sheet. Bake in the preheated oven for 15 minutes or until lightly toasted, stirring once.

3.

Cool on the pan 20 minutes. Store in an airtight container up to 2 weeks.
