Chef notes

The muffuletta is the quintessential French Quarter sandwich. Created by Italian immigrants who came from Sicily to New Orleans, it tells a story of the American dream, but in a very delicious way. I love all the layers of cured meats, provolone cheese and the bright flavors of the pickled giardiniera vegetables as well as the briny undertones of a chopped olive salad. The light as air sesame bread is there to catch all the juices and flavors from leaving the muffuletta's hammy grips.

Technique tip: Do not over-process olive salad in the food processor. Pulse only about 5 seconds.

Swap option: Giardinera, dried Sicilian oregano, pepperoncini, Castelvetrano olives and piquillo peppers can be purchased from a grocery store, specialty Italian store or online. A large 1- to 2-pound sesame loaf can be used instead of a muffuletta roll.
