This is an amazing recipe that focuses on understanding flavor and balance in a beverage. I love finding ways to amplify flavors in my cocktails glasses by swapping one ingredient out at a time and comparing the differences.
Technique tips: Toast coriander until aromatic for complexity in your beverage.
Swap option: Play around with other botanicals and flavors such as mustard seed and juniper. The key is balance with flavors.
Ingredients
- 5 ounces rich simple syrup (2 parts sugar to 1 part water by weight or volume)
- 2 lemon peels, divided
- 1/2 teaspoon coriander
- 1/2 teaspoon dried elderflower
- 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
- tonic water
- juniper berries, to garnish
- 1 sprig mint, to garnish
Preparation
1.Start with a Mason jar with rich simple syrup.
2.Add one of the lemon peels, the coriander, dried elderflower and ground ginger.
3.Move to a bubbled wine glass filled with ice.
4.Add 2 ounces of homemade syrup and top with tonic water.
5.Garnish with some juniper berries, a mint sprig and a lemon peel.
