Ingredients

  • 2 (28-ounce) cans pork and beans, drained
  • 1 cup of your favorite barbecue sauce
  • 1 cup dark brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 1 tablespoon hot sauce (optional)
  • 1 cup chopped barbecued meat, preferably beef or pork
  • Chef notes

We've been making and loving these easy beans for over a decade. Whether we are cooking them on a barbecue pit or in our oven, this recipe is rich and tangy. You can dress it up with extra meat or even add some jalapeños and hot sauce.

Technique tip: Pour your beans into a colander to drain off some of the liquid before adding to the Dutch oven.

    Preparation

    1.

    Preheat oven to 250 F.

    2.

Pour the beans into the Dutch oven and add barbecue sauce, brown sugar, mustard and hot sauce. Stir together and fold in barbecue meat.

    3.

Cover Dutch oven and bake in preheated oven for 1½ hours.

    4.

Remove lid and stir beans. Place uncovered in oven for the final 30 minutes to set the top and develop richer flavors. Remove from the oven and enjoy.
