Chef notes

While the espresso martini may currently be giving this liquor-coffee combo classic a run for its money, this remains the true pot o' gold standard for St. Patty's Day imbibing.

Technique tips: Use a stemmed glass no larger than 8 ounces. (With an 8-ounce glass, you can go up to 1.5 ounces of Irish whiskey.) Top with no more than four ounces of steaming-hot sweetened coffee. Lightly whip the heavy cream. It should not form peaks, but it should be frothy enough to float, creating that perfect separation of coffee from cream, which is, after all, the signature of the drink.

Ingredients

  • 2 sugar cubes
  • 4 ounces brewed coffee
  • 1 ounce Irish whiskey
  • 1/3 ounce Irish cream, such as Five Farms
  • heavy cream, lightly whipped for topping

Preparation

1.

Preheat a stemmed 8-ounce heat-proof glass by filling it with hot water. Once warm, discard the water.

2.

Add sugar cubes to the glass, then add coffee and stir until the sugar is dissolved.

3.

Add Irish whiskey and Irish cream to the coffee and stir gently and briefly to combine.

4.

Float a layer of whipped cream over the top of the coffee by pouring it gently over the back of a spoon.
