Chef notes

Chef's notes: If you have never grilled, roasted or charred a banana before, you'll be surprised by how it adds depth to whatever you are making. From curries to barbecue sauce, a grilled banana adds such a great, intense flavor. Spring and summer brings out that dusty barbecue that has been hiding all winter. What better way to show off your culinary skills than with a grilled banana split milkshake? Trust me this is a recipe that you will pull out every summer if not ever week of the summer :) Have fun and remember to put your spin on it.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup 2 percent milk
  • 2 bananas
  • fine sugar
  • 3 cups vanilla ice cream
  • 6 Nilla wafers or other vanilla cookies, crumbled
  • 1/4 cup large marsmallows
  • whipped cream
  • maraschino cherries
  • sprinkles
  • favorite chocolate bar, broken into pieces

Preparation

Directions: Set your grill to high. Slice bananas in half lengthwise. Brush each side of the banana halves with fine sugar. Grill bananas until just slightly charred, then remove and set aside.

Reserve 1/2 banana for garnish. Fill blender with milk, bananas, and ice cream. Blend until smooth. Take marshmallows and place on skewer. Roast over a flame to give a slight char. Melt chocolate bar over double boiler (or in the microwave).  Drizzle melted chocolate over two milkshake glasses. Divide milkshake into the glasses. Garnish milkshakes with toasted marshmallows, grilled banana, sprinkles, maraschino cherries and whipped cream.
