Chef notes

These festive reindeer treats — made with chocolate-covered sandwich cookies, tiny pretzels and mini candies — are almost too cute to eat! They're a fun holiday project and delicious delight for kids and grownups alike. You’ll need to take a trip to the candy store to stock up on a few ingredients, but I don’t think anyone — especially your little ones — will mind. Here’s what you need: grab a bag of small candy eye balls and small cinnamon candies (these will serve as the eyes and nose for your reindeer). You only need to pick up a few other basics from the grocery store — milk chocolate, coconut oil, peanut butter sandwich cookies (or your favorite type of sandwich cookies) and mini pretzels.

There are more than a few reasons why we love these treats. For starters, they’re kid-friendly so you can make them at home with your little ones (and they’ll love the project!). Second, it’s a relatively inexpensive baking project so you don’t need to break the bank to make it happen. And best of all, you can package them in festive wrappings for a holiday treat to give to neighbors, friends, co-workers or your kids’ classmates. Oh and did we mention that they’re super fast to make? From start to finish, these edible chocolate reindeer come together in less than half an hour — and you don’t even need to turn on your oven. Win-win!

Technique Tip: As you melted the chocolate in the microwave, stir it with the coconut oil in 15-second increments to prevent the chocolate from burning or overcooking, Otherwise, the mixture will be lumpy and you may struggle to whisk it back to life.

Swap Option: You could swap the peanut butter crackers with any store-bought round cookie, such as chocolate- or vanilla-sandwich cookies. If possible, choose double-stuffed cookies for an extra-thick reindeer.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 teaspoon coconut oil
  • 1 box peanut butter sandwich crackers (about 48 crackers)

Preparation

1.

Combine the chocolate and coconut oil in a microwave-safe bowl. Place in the microwave and microwave for 15-second increments, stirring in between, until completely melted.

2.

With a fork, submerge a peanut butter sandwich cracker in the bowl of chocolate. Lift the cracker from the bottom out of the bowl with the fork and wipe off any excess chocolate on the lip of the bowl.

3.

Slide the cracker onto a parchment paper-lined baking sheet. Stick a pretzel at the top of each cracker, a cinnamon candy toward the bottom of each cracker, and an eyeball on either side of the cinnamon candy. Repeat with remaining ingredients.

4.

Place the baking sheet in the fridge and let chill for at least 15 minutes or until set.
