The Kentucky Derby is one of the most celebrated sporting events. For kids and adults alike, the race is celebrated with games, crazy hats and of course mint juleps, It isn’t a Derby party without them. Traditionally made with just whiskey, sugar and fresh mint leaves, the julep can be strong drink for those who’ve never had one before. This sip is not for the faint of heart.

There are lots of variations on the original recipe including flavors like peach and raspberry. Our pick to toast this year’s Derby is this sophisticated take. This year up the ante at your party and give your juleps a bubbly makeover with this Champagne spin. It’s refreshing and perfect for a Derby party.

Ingredients

  • 3 ounces Champagne
  • 1/2 ounce whiskey
  • 1 sugar cube
  • 6-7 mint leaves
  • Mint bouquet, lemon peel or strawberry for garnish

Preparation

In a julep tin or rocks glass, add mint leaves and sugar cube and a splash of water; gently press mint leaves with a muddler to release oils.

Add whiskey, champagne, crushed ice and stir gently.  

Garnish with a mint bouquet, lemon peel or strawberry — or one of each.
