  • 1/2 cup butter lettuce
  • 3 slice bacon
  • 1 slice tomato

The three most important letters in a bacon-lover’s alphabet add up to one classic sandwich.

But to be truly great, it must be made with the best ingredients you can find-sun-ripened heirloom tomatoes, sweet leafy green lettuce, your favorite bread, and a really splendid bacon.

One other thing.

When it comes to the sandwich spread, some people swear by Best Foods mayonnaise; others only touch Miracle Whip.

Since you’ve gone to the trouble of using the finest ingredients, you might want to make your own spread.

I’ve included a tasty homemade herb mayonnaise that is good plain or seasoned.

But there’s nothing wrong with unscrewing that blue lid, and spreading it on thick.

On each bread slice, spread equal amounts of the mayonnaise.

Arrange half of the lettuce on 1 bread slice and top with the bacon.

Arrange the remaining lettuce on the other bread slice and top with the tomato slices.

Season the tomato with salt and pepper to taste.

Press the bread slices gently together and cut in half diagonally.

Transfer to a plate and serve.

If you wish to serve it open-faced, assemble the sandwich on the plate.
