Weekend box office prediction: 'Expendables' will come out on top

You’d have to be living with a dial-up connection to have missed all the testosterone vs. estrogen headlines surrounding the battle between “The Expendables” and “Eat, Pray, Love” for this weekend's box-office crown. It’s something of a fair characterization: the former is an action flick, directed by and starring Sylvester Stallone, and also includes Jet Li and Jason Stratham. The latter — you already know what that’s about, unless you have the aforementioned dial-up connection and you haven’t been to a bookstore since 2006. But for all the marketing and Julia Roberts-ness of “Eat, Pray, Love,” it’s still based on a book that’s pretty polarizing among audiences. You either love it, or you think a more apt title would be “Eat, Pray, Loathe" (or as Rolling Stone's Peter Travers characterized it, Starve, curse, hate). Which is why I think a No. 2 finish is most likely for the film, and “The Expendables” will come out on top. The dark horse of the weekend is “Scott Pilgrim vs. The World,” starring Michael Cera. It’s based on a popular series of graphic novels and has a built-in following, plus, it’s PG-13 and is debuting in more than 2,600 theaters, so expect it to round out the top three.
