Weekend box office: Lohan's 'Machete' plays OK

It's unlikely that many people earmarked Labor Day weekend as Lindsay Lohan's comeback weekend, but it certainly had that undercurrent as her film "Machete" opened up against George Clooney's "The American." And the verdict? Although "Machete" came in No. 2, bringing in $11.4 million, against "The American," which brought in an estimated $16.2 million (according to Box Office Mojo), it seems fair

It's unlikely that many people earmarked Labor Day weekend as Lindsay Lohan's comeback weekend, but it certainly had that undercurrent as her film "Machete" opened up against George Clooney's "The American." And the verdict? Although "Machete" came in No. 2, bringing in $11.4 million, against "The American," which brought in an estimated $16.2 million (according to Box Office Mojo), it seems fair to say "Machete" did OK. The two films opened in a comparable number of theaters and "The American" had a much stronger publicity push. Maybe things will be alright for Lohan after all. The third new release of the weekend, "Going the Distance" did the opposite. The Drew Barrymore-Justin Long film came in No. 5, and only grossed $6.9 million. This is, however, an improvement over Barrymore's last release, "Everybody's Fine," which only made $3.8 million when it opened in December 2009.
