"What happened?" That was George Clooney's first response when a reporter asked him about the big celebrity breakup news that had the rest of us reeling Tuesday.
That's because, rather than reading Hollywood headlines about Angelina Jolie and his pal, Brad Pitt, going their separate ways, Clooney had spent the morning attending the Leaders Summit for Refugees at the United Nations General Assembly.
CNN reporter Richard Roth stopped Clooney as he exited the event and clearly caught the 55-year-old off guard.
"I didn't know that. Wow," the actor said. "I feel very sorry then."
Jolie filed for divorce from Pitt on Monday and is said to be seeking physical custody of their six children.
"That's a sad story and unfortunate for a family," Clooney continued. "It's an unfortunate story about a family. I feel very sorry to hear that. This is the first I've heard of it."
Clooney and Pitt have a friendship that dates back to long before either of them became married men in 2014. Their bond began when they filmed "Ocean's Eleven" together in 2001.
Clooney has called Pitt "one of the great guys," but in 2012 he told The Hollywood Reporter that their friendship is "different from what people think, meaning we don't spend a lot of time together."
